François Bienfait, Head of Department of Asylum Support a.i.
François Bienfait is since 16 August 2018 the Head a.i. of EASO’s Department of Asylum Support (DAS). Since July 2016 he has been EASO’s Liaison Officer to the EU Institutions in Brussels. From March until July 2016 he was based in Greece (Athens, Lesbos, Chios and Samos) as EASO’s Coordinator for the implementation of the EU-Turkey Statement in Greece following the EU Council Decision of 18 March 2016. François started to work for EASO in December 2011 when he was recruited for the post of Head of the Centre for Training, Quality and Expertise (CTQE), the predecessor of DAS.
Before joining EASO, François was for 9 years the Belgian Deputy Commissioner for Refugees and Stateless Persons (CGVS, 2002 - 2011). In this function he was recognized as a quality manager and actively contributed to the initial development of the European Asylum Curriculum (EAC), which was the predecessor of the EASO Training Curriculum (ETC). For three years (1999 – 2002) he had been a Justice and Home Affairs expert for the Belgian Deputy Prime Minister, advising primarily on Asylum and Immigration matters. He had been working in this field since 1993.
François holds a Law degree from the University of Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium and after some professional experience in the UK and in Spain he developed a keen interest in Immigration and Asylum Law and Policy.
