On 16-17 October, the Swedish Migration Agency (SMA) hosted a workshop on the reception of unaccompanied minors (UAMs). This was the third thematic Workshop jointly organised by EPRA and EASO. Fifteen EU+ states participated in the discussions and shared their national practices and experiences. EASO representatives from the Asylum Support Unit, the Training Unit and the Operational Unit also attended the meeting and presented EASO’s activities with regard to UAMs.
The agenda of the Workshop was structured around three sessions:
- The organisation of a network of reception facilities for unaccompanied children;
- The identification of special needs, best interest assessment and response and referral mechanisms;
- The management of reception places for UAMs.
Participants also had the opportunity to visit the “Björkudden” reception facility for UAMs under the responsibility of the municipality of Solna and run by a private company.
Every session of the programme began with feedback to a preliminary questionnaire to which 14 countries replied. Then, country presentations from The Netherlands, Sweden, Austria, Belgium and Norway were delivered by experts on the reception of UAMs, wherein they explained their respective national systems. The results of the Workshop will lead to a mapping report that will be shared with the Reception Network.
