23rd EASO and 1st EASO- FRONTEX Management Board meeting
On 7 and 8 February 2017, EASO’s Management Board convened in Valletta for the 23rd time since the establishment of the agency, to discuss EASO’s current operations and future work plans. The Board comprises representatives of EU Member States, the European Commission and UNHCR. Representatives of Associate Countries (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) were invited to attend the meeting as observers. Read more...

Every Italian boy and girl are told in school that Lampedusa is the southernmost isle of their country. But they should also know that it has become one of the most common arriving points for thousands of migrants, coming from the North Africa coasts. Even if these people normally do not stay in the hotspot for so long time, life there can be very hard and the only moments of comforting are to be found in small details, like a donated cup of tea or the smile of a cheerful child. January 2017
In January 2017, EU+ countries recorded 61,697 applications for international protection.This marked the fifth consecutive month decrease in numbers of applications lodged in the EU+ and the lowest monthly total since May 2015. Read more...

EASO Training

 

Extensive training programme for EASO interim case workers to be deployed in the Greek hotspots
Since the beginning of February 2017, EASO launched an extensive training programme for interim case workers employed by EASO to support the expert workforce in the Greek hotspots by conducting the border procedure alongside asylum officials deployed by Member States. The training programme aims at developing knowledge, skills and competences of the interim case workers in conducting the asylum procedure. Read more...

Pilot workshop for Judicial Trainers: Implementing the EASO Judicial Analysis on Qualification for International Protection in national professional development measures (EASO, 16-17 February 2017).
On the 16-17th of February 16 Judges from 12 Member States were welcomed in Malta at the EASO premises for the Pilot Workshop on Qualification for International Protection. The workshop, which was based on the Judicial Analysis from the EASO Professional Development Series aimed to give members of Courts and Tribunals a detailed understanding of the inclusion clauses for qualification for refugee status and for subsidiary protection as stipulated in the Directive QD (recast). 2nd EASO Training to Italian reception officers on the Reception of Unaccompanied Children (Naples, 16-17 February 2017)
On 16 and 17 of February 2017, EASO organised in Naples a training on the reception of unaccompanied children, implemented under the EASO Operating plan to Italy signed on 22nd of December 2016. The training represented the second of a series of regional trainings that are being organised by EASO in Italy, with the first training having taken place in Bologna in January. Read more...

Training on identification of torture victims
The Medico-Legal Documentation of Torture for Asylum Procedures training started in January, continued in February with two sessions, targeting medical general practitioners, specialists and asylum case-workers who have have been trained on medico-legal (forensic) evaluation methods and practical use of medical documentation in the asylum procedure.
